Guieldu was founded as a musical project in late 2019 in Asturias, at the initiative of the group's flautist and composer, Héctor Aneiros. The band is a young group steeped in Celtic music, inspired by the sound of Celtic groups and artists from the 1980s and 1990s.
The name comes from an expression typical of some areas of central-western Asturias. There, " dir al guieldu" or " tar al guieldu" means to go and pick small fruits in the forest or at sea. Therefore, Guieldu is also an allegory of the band's work: collecting traditional music from the Atlantic region and adapting it to their own style.
Due to the pandemic and the lockdowns of 2020, the group's activities were cut short shortly after their inception. Rehearsals were affected by long breaks, which hampered not only the preparation of the repertoire but also the stability of the lineup.
After these initial ups and downs, throughout 2021 Guieldu managed to consolidate its membership with seven members from Asturias and León. These musicians come from diverse backgrounds, from traditional and classical music to metal, world music, and of course, folk.
The group included Susana Sors, vocals and acoustic guitar; Jorge Álvarez, bouzouki, mandolin, and electric guitar; Laura Méndez, synthesizers; Pablo Santamarta , bass; Héctor Aneiros , whistles, flutes, and ocarinas; Celia Nieto, violin; and Gabriel Catalán , drummer.
By the summer of 2022, the repertoire was ready, and the first live concerts were scheduled. The band's tour included, among others, the Sendim Interceltic Festival (Portugal), the Avilés Interceltic Festival, and the Western Interceltic Festival.
In the fall of that year, Celia and Gabri left the band due to their academic commitments. They were then replaced by violinist Olaya Pérez and Rubén Cadenas on drums, percussion, and programming.
The start of 2023 couldn't have been more positive. In February, Guieldu won the AMAS Asturian music award for " Best Folk Song 2022 " for L'Aremu.
2024 was another important year for Guieldu , winning the AMAS Asturian music award for Best Folk Song for the second time , this time with Perdayuri. That year, Olaya was replaced by violinist Carmen Tomé.
